I have photographed a lot of these, and the ones that go well have almost nothing in common except that somebody thought about the boring parts in advance. Here is what actually matters.
Pick the place for the light, not the view
Pidurangala at sunrise is the most requested spot in the country and it earns it: you climb in the dark, the light comes up over Sigiriya rock across the plain, and for about forty minutes it is gold and nearly empty.
Little Adam’s Peak near Ella is the gentler version — a walk rather than a climb, which matters if one of you is doing it in good shoes. The Galle Fort ramparts work at the other end of the day, in the twenty minutes after the sun has gone.
Go early. Earlier than feels sensible
An early start also solves the secrecy problem. Nobody questions "let us go and see the sunrise" the way they question a sudden detour.
- Pidurangala: leave before 5am. By eight the top is full and the light is flat.
- Little Adam’s Peak: first light, same reason.
- Galle Fort: the hour before sunset, then stay for blue hour.
How we keep it secret
We plan it entirely by message, for weeks if needed. I send you a photograph of exactly where to stand, we agree a signal, and on the day I am already there before you — looking like another traveller with a camera, because at sunrise on a rock, that is exactly what everybody is.
Nothing goes to a shared email address. If you share a phone, tell me and we will work around it.
The three things that usually go wrong
- Weather. Agree a backup day or spot in advance, before you fly. One free reschedule within your stay is included.
- Timing. Sunrise shoots outside Kandy need an overnight stay nearby — you cannot drive from Kandy that morning.
- Nerves. People rush it. Kneel for longer than feels natural; it is over in two seconds otherwise, and two seconds is hard to photograph.
What happens afterwards
I give you a minute, because you will need it. Then I come over, introduce myself properly, and we take a proper walk together while she is still shaking. Those twenty minutes are usually where the photographs you end up printing come from — not the kneeling.
Nothing is posted anywhere until you both say yes. If you would rather I never shared them at all, that is fine and it stays true years later.
If you are planning something, message me and I will give you the version of this advice that applies to your dates and your trip.
