The white parapet wall, the old pavilion, and the hills behind the water. Quiet early, busy by mid-morning.
Just after sunrise
The avenue of rain trees and the giant Java fig. Deep green shade in the middle of the day, which is exactly when everywhere else is unusable.
Late morning to afternoon
Colonial shopfronts, painted walls and the light that comes down between buildings in the last hour.
Late afternoon
The whole city and the lake below you. Best when the afternoon haze lifts.

Not for the streets or the lakeside. The Royal Botanical Gardens charge an entry fee per person, and some venues inside the Temple of the Tooth complex restrict photography — I will tell you which before we go.
For the lake, first light. It is a different place at six in the morning than at nine, and the difference shows in the photographs more than any other decision we make.
